First to Recite the Qur'an Aloud in Makkah
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud عَبْد الله بْن مَسْعُود
A humble shepherd boy who became one of the foremost scholars of the Qur'an and Sunnah, so close to the Prophet ﷺ that people thought him a member of his family. He was the first to recite the Qur'an openly before Quraysh, and a leading teacher of the next generation.
The Shepherd Who Believed
Ibn Mas'ud was tending sheep when the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr, thirsty, asked him for milk; he marvelled as the Prophet ﷺ drew milk from a young ewe that had never given any. He embraced Islam among the very first and entered the Prophet's service so intimately that he carried his sandals and was privy to his secrets.
The Qur'an Recited Aloud
When the Companions feared to recite the Qur'an openly before the hostile Quraysh, the small-statured Ibn Mas'ud volunteered. He stood at the Ka'bah and recited Surah ar-Rahman aloud; they beat him bloody, but he had become the first to proclaim the Qur'an publicly in Makkah.
Master of the Qur'an
The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever wishes to recite the Qur'an as fresh as when it was revealed, let him recite it in the manner of Ibn Mas'ud,' and named him among four from whom to learn the Qur'an. He knew the circumstances of revelation of every surah and became a fountain of fiqh, especially for the people of Kufa.
Teacher of a Generation
Umar appointed him over the treasury and teaching in Kufa, where he raised a school of scholars who shaped Islamic law. Slight in body but weighty in faith — the Prophet ﷺ said his thin legs would be heavier on the Scale than the mountain of Uhud — he died in Madinah around 32 AH.
