The Closest Follower of the Sunnah

Abdullah ibn Umar عَبْد الله بْن عُمَر

Son of Umar, who grew up in Islam and devoted his life to imitating the Prophet ﷺ in the smallest details. Cautious in giving verdicts, fearless in speaking truth to power, he refused the caliphate to avoid shedding Muslim blood, and narrated a vast body of hadith.

Raised in the Faith

Ibn Umar embraced Islam as a child with his father and emigrated young. Eager to serve, he presented himself for Uhud and the Trench but was turned back as too young, joining the ranks of the fighters only when he came of age.

Following Every Footstep

No Companion was more meticulous in following the Sunnah. He would pray where the Prophet ﷺ had prayed, rest where he had rested, even guide his camel to step where the Prophet's camel had stepped — out of pure love and a fear of inventing anything in the religion.

Cautious in Fatwa, Bold in Truth

Despite his immense knowledge he was extremely careful in issuing rulings, often saying 'I do not know' rather than risk error. Yet he feared no ruler in speaking the truth, and his moral authority was such that his stances steadied the community in turbulent times.

Refusing the Throne

In the strife after the Companions, many urged Ibn Umar to claim the caliphate, but he refused to let a drop of Muslim blood be shed on his account. He lived austerely and generously, freeing slaves and giving away what he loved, and died in Makkah around 73 AH.

Love of the Prophet ﷺ shows in imitating even his smallest habits.
Saying 'I do not know' can be a mark of the deepest knowledge.
Avoiding bloodshed can be a greater service than seizing power.
