Filled with Faith to the Marrow
Ammar ibn Yasir عَمَّار بْن يَاسِر
Among the earliest and most severely tortured Muslims, son of the first martyrs of Islam, Sumayyah and Yasir. The Prophet ﷺ said Ammar was filled with faith to his very bones and that a rebellious party would kill him — a prophecy fulfilled decades later.
A Family of Martyrs
Ammar, his father Yasir, and his mother Sumayyah were among the first to accept Islam and among the most brutally tortured on the burning sands of Makkah by the clan of Makhzum. Sumayyah was killed under torture — the first martyr of Islam — and Yasir died likewise. Passing them in their agony, the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Patience, family of Yasir; your appointment is Paradise.'
An Excused Word
Under unbearable torture Ammar once uttered words of disbelief to save his life, then came weeping to the Prophet ﷺ. Revelation reassured him: one compelled while his heart is firm in faith bears no blame. The Prophet ﷺ told him that if they tortured him again, he could repeat the words.
…except for one who is forced while his heart is secure in faith…
Beloved and Trusted
The Prophet ﷺ loved Ammar dearly, saying he was 'filled with faith to the marrow of his bones', and gave the Companions leave to follow his guidance. Ammar took part in the Hijrah to Abyssinia and Madinah and fought in every major battle.
The Prophecy Fulfilled
The Prophet ﷺ had foretold that 'the transgressing party' would kill Ammar. When he was killed at the Battle of Siffin in 37 AH, well past ninety, fighting on the side of Ali, the prophecy was fulfilled and served as a sign to many of where the truth lay in that conflict.

- The first martyrs of Islam were the poor and the powerless — and their reward is Paradise.
