Son of a Seeker of the True Faith
Sa'id ibn Zayd سَعِيد بْن زَيْد
One of the ten promised Paradise, an early convert whose own father Zayd ibn Amr had rejected idolatry and sought the religion of Ibrahim before Islam came. Sa'id and his wife Fatimah were the means by which Umar ibn al-Khattab was guided.
A Father Who Sought the Truth
Sa'id's father, Zayd ibn Amr, had abandoned idol worship in the days of ignorance, refusing to eat what was sacrificed to idols and praying to the God of Ibrahim, though he died before the Prophet's mission. Sa'id inherited that hunger for truth and accepted Islam among the earliest believers.
The Conversion of Umar
Sa'id was married to Fatimah bint al-Khattab, Umar's sister. When Umar stormed to their house intending harm, he found them reading the Qur'an. The verses he heard there softened his heart, and he went straight to embrace Islam — a turning point for the whole Muslim community.
Quiet Service
Sa'id fought in all the battles except Badr, from which he was absent on a mission for the Prophet ﷺ, though the Prophet awarded him a share of its spoils. He took part in the conquest of Syria and lived a life of restraint, far from seeking fame or office.
A Defender of the Wronged
Famously, when a woman falsely accused him of seizing her land, he prayed that if she lied Allah would blind her and make the land her grave — and so it came to pass, a sign of the answered prayer of a sincere man. He died around 51 AH, among the ten promised Paradise.
