The First Martyr of Islam
Sumayyah bint Khayyat سُمَيَّة بِنْت خَيَّاط
An enslaved woman of Makkah, mother of Ammar ibn Yasir, among the first to accept Islam and the first person ever to be killed for it. Tortured to force her recantation, she refused, and was martyred — the first soul to give her life for the oneness of Allah.
Among the First Believers
Sumayyah was a freed or enslaved woman in the household connected to the Banu Makhzum, and one of the first seven or so to openly embrace Islam. Without wealth, tribe, or protector, she and her family had nothing to shield them from the fury of Quraysh.
Tortured for La ilaha illa Allah
Her family was dragged out into the burning desert and tortured to make them abandon their faith. As they suffered, the Prophet ﷺ would pass by and console them: 'Patience, family of Yasir; indeed your promised place is Paradise.' Yet none of them recanted.
The First to Die
Abu Jahl, enraged by her steadfastness, killed Sumayyah — making her the first martyr in the history of Islam, a woman, elderly and powerless in the world's eyes, but immovable in faith. Her husband Yasir was martyred likewise, and their son Ammar carried their legacy.
An Honour Beyond the World
That the first blood shed for Islam was hers is a permanent testament to the worth of the weak and oppressed in the sight of Allah. The early Muslims never forgot the family of Yasir, whose patience the Prophet ﷺ himself had sealed with the promise of Paradise.
