The Living Martyr of Uhud

Talha ibn Ubaydullah طَلْحَة بْن عُبَيْد الله

One of the ten promised Paradise and among the eight earliest converts, Talha shielded the Prophet ﷺ with his own body at Uhud, taking the blows meant for him until his hand was paralysed. The Prophet ﷺ called him 'the living martyr' for the day he survived having earned Paradise.

An Early Convert

A young merchant of Banu Taym, Talha was guided to Islam through Abu Bakr. His clan tied and tortured him together with Abu Bakr to force them to recant, but he held firm, becoming one of the first eight to embrace the faith.

The Shield at Uhud

At the battle of Uhud, when the Muslims were scattered and the Prophet ﷺ was exposed to the enemy, Talha stood firm before him, parrying arrows and blows with his own body and hand until the hand was crippled. The Prophet ﷺ said that day, 'Whoever wishes to see a martyr walking upon the earth, let him look at Talha.'

Generosity Without Limit

Talha's trade made him wealthy, and he gave with both hands — settling debts, marrying off the widowed, and supporting the poor of his clan until he was called 'Talha the Generous' and 'Talha of goodness'. He saw his wealth purely as a means to draw nearer to Allah.

Death at the Camel

In the strife after Uthman's death, Talha was killed at the Battle of the Camel in 36 AH, among the most painful losses of that fitnah. He remained one of the ten given glad tidings of Paradise in this life.

  • Love for the Prophet ﷺ is measured by what we are willing to lose for his sake.
  • Wealth gains worth only when it flows out to others.
  • Steadfastness under torture is the seal of sincere faith.
