Mother of the Believers — The Wise Counsellor
Umm Salama أُمّ سَلَمَة
Hind bint Abi Umayyah, an early emigrant who suffered cruel separation from her husband and child for her faith, later a wife of the Prophet ﷺ renowned for her intelligence. Her wise counsel at Hudaybiyyah saved the day when the Companions hesitated to obey.
Torn from Her Family
Among the first to accept Islam with her husband Abu Salama, Umm Salama tried to emigrate but was stopped: her clan seized her, his clan seized their infant son in a tug that dislocated the child's arm, and for a year she sat weeping each day at the place of parting until relatives relented and let her go. She made the journey to Madinah alone with her child.
A Prayer in Affliction
When Abu Salama died of his Uhud wounds, she grieved deeply and recited the supplication he had taught her from the Prophet ﷺ: 'To Allah we belong and to Him we return; O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it with something better.' She could not imagine anyone better than Abu Salama — yet Allah replaced him with the Prophet ﷺ himself, who married her.
Who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.'
Wisdom at Hudaybiyyah
After the treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the Companions were so grieved that they hesitated when the Prophet ﷺ ordered them to slaughter their sacrifices and shave. On Umm Salama's advice, he went out and silently did so himself first; seeing him, the Companions rushed to follow. Her counsel resolved a tense and dangerous moment.
A Long Life of Knowledge
Umm Salama narrated many hadith and was sought for her understanding and judgement. She was among the last of the Mothers of the Believers to die, around 62 AH, leaving a legacy of patience, wisdom, and steadfast faith.
