The Beloved — The Only Companion Named in the Qur'an

Zayd ibn Harithah زَيْد بْن حَارِثَة

Once a captured slave gifted to the Prophet ﷺ, Zayd chose him over his own freedom and family, was freed and adopted, and became 'the beloved' of the Prophet ﷺ. He is the only Companion mentioned by name in the Qur'an, and he was martyred leading the army at Mu'tah.

He Chose the Prophet ﷺ

Kidnapped as a boy and sold into slavery, Zayd came into the Prophet's household and was given to him by Khadijah. When his father and uncle found him and came to ransom him, the Prophet ﷺ let Zayd choose — and Zayd chose to remain with him over returning home a free man. Moved, the Prophet ﷺ freed him and declared him his own before the people.

Among the First Believers

Zayd was among the very first to accept Islam — the first freed slave to do so. He was so dear that he was once called 'Zayd ibn Muhammad' until the Qur'an ended the practice of adoptive naming, restoring his lineage as 'ibn Harithah' while affirming the bonds of brotherhood in faith.

Qur'an 33:5

Call them by the names of their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah.

Named in Revelation

When Zayd's marriage ended and the Prophet ﷺ married his former wife Zaynab — abolishing a deep-rooted taboo about adopted sons — the Qur'an recorded the matter, naming Zayd directly. He thus became the only Companion mentioned by personal name in the Book of Allah.

Qur'an 33:37

So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you…

Commander and Martyr

The Prophet ﷺ entrusted Zayd with command in several expeditions despite the presence of older, nobler men — a sign of his rank. At Mu'tah in 8 AH he was the first commander appointed, and he fought until he fell a martyr, the first of the three commanders to die that day.

Lessons

  • Love and good character can bind hearts more tightly than blood or freedom.
  • Islam restored justice to lineage while honouring brotherhood in faith.
  • Merit, not age or nobility, determines who is fit to lead.
