Glorifying and magnifying Allah on the journey

قَالَ جَابِرٌ رضي الله عنه: ((كُنَّا إِذَا صَعَدنَا كَبَّرنَا، وَإِذَا نَزَلنَا سَبَّحنَا)).

Approximate Arabic reading aid

Qāla jābirun raḍiyallāhu 'anhu: kunnā idhā ṣa'adnā kabbarnā, wa'idhā nazalnā sabbaḥnā.

English meaning

Jabir said: Whenever we went up a hill we would say Allaahu 'Akber (Allah is the Most Great) and when we descended we would say Subhaanallaah (Glory is to Allah)

Explanation (Tafseer)

This travel remembrance links changes in elevation with two forms of praise. Going upward is accompanied by declaring Allah greater, while descending is accompanied by declaring Him perfect. The journey’s physical movement becomes a repeated cue for magnification and glorification.
