Invocation upon hearing a dog barking in the night

إِذَا سَمِعتُم نُبَاحَ الكِلاَبِ وَنَهِيقَ الحَمِيرِ بِاللَّيلِ فَتَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنهُنَّ؛ فَإِنَّهُنَّ يَرَينَ مَا لاَ تَرَونَ

Idhā sami'tum nubāḥa alkilābi wanahīqa alḥamīri bil-layli fata'awwadhū billāhi minhunna; fa'innahunna yarayna mā lā tarawna

English meaning

If you hear the barking of dogs or the braying of asses at night, seek refuge in Allah for they see what you do not.

Explanation (Tafseer)

When dogs bark or donkeys bray during the night, this teaching directs the listener to seek refuge in Allah. The stated reason is that these animals see what people do not see. The response therefore places concern about what is unseen within a direct appeal for Allah’s protection.
