Invocation to be recited while standing at Safa and Marwah

لَمَّا دَنَا النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنَ الصَّفَا قَرَأَ: ﴿إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالمَروَةَ مِن شَعَآئِرِ اللَّهِ﴾ أَبدَأُ بِمَا بَدَأَ اللَّهُ بِهِ)) فَبَدَأَ بِالصَّفَا فَرَقِيَ عَلَيهِ حَتَّى رَأَى البَيتَ، فَاستَقبَلَ القِبلَةَ، فَوَحَّدَ اللَّهَ وَكبَّرَهُ وَقَالَ: ((لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ المُلكُ وَلَهُ الحَمدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَدِيرٌ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحدَهُ، أَنجَزَ وَعدَهُ، وَنَصَرَ عَبدَهُ، وَهَزَمَ الأَحزَابَ وَحدَهُ، ثُمَّ دَعَا بَينَ ذلكَ. قَالَ مِثلَ هَذَا ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ)) الحَدِيثُ. وَفِيهِ: ((فَفَعَلَ عَلَى المَروَةِ كَمَا فَعَلَ عَلَى الصَّفَا)).

Lammā danā an-nabiyyu ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam mina aṣ-ṣafā qara'a: inna aṣ-ṣafā wal-marwata min sha'ā'iri allāhi abda'u bimā bada'a allāhu bihi fabada'a biṣ-ṣafā faraqiya 'alayhi ḥattā ra'ā albayta, fastaqbala alqiblata, fawaḥḥada allāha wa kabbarahu waqāla: lā ilāha illā allāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahu almulku walahu alḥamdu wahuwa 'alā kulli shay'in qadīrun, lā ilāha illā allāhu waḥdahu, anjaza wa'dahu, wanaṣara 'abdahu, wahazama al'aḥzāba waḥdahu, thumma da'ā bayna dhālika. qāla mithla hādhā thalātha marrātin alḥadīthu. wafīhi: fafa'ala 'alā almarwati kamā fa'ala 'alā aṣ-ṣafā.

English meaning

Jabir said when describing the Prophet’s pilgrimage: ‘…and when he approached mount Safa he recited: (Indeed Safa and Marwah are from the places of worship of Allah…) (I begin with what Allah began with.) so he started with Safa and climed it until he could see the KaAAbah, he then faced it and said: (Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.) and then he would say the following three times making a supplication (one should make a personal supplication) after each time: (None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner.To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things amnipotent. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, aided His Servant and single-handedly defeated the allies.)) (he would repeat this action at Marwah.

Explanation (Tafseer)

At Safa and Marwah, the passage begins with the Quranic reminder that both places are among Allah’s symbols. It then combines facing the qiblah, magnifying Allah, declaring His oneness, praising His sovereignty and power, and remembering His fulfilled promise and help. Personal supplication is made between repetitions of these declarations.
