The Three Quls (Al-Mu'awwidhat) — What to say before sleeping

(يَجمَعُ كَفَّيهِ ثُمَّ يَنفُثُ فِيهِمَا فَيَقرَأُ فِيهِمَا:بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ﴿قُل هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ * اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ* لَم يَلِد وَلَم يُولَد* وَلَم يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ﴾. بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ﴿قُل أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الفَلَقِ* مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ* وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ* وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي العُقَدِ* وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ﴾. بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ﴿قُل أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ* مَلِكِ النَّاسِ* إِلَهِ النَّاسِ* مِن شَرِّ الوَسوَاسِ الخَنَّاسِ* الَّذِي يُوَسوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ* مِنَ الجِنَّةِ وَ النَّاسِ﴾ ثُمَّ يَمسَحُ بِهِمَا مَا استَطَاعَ مِن جَسَدِهِ يَبدَأُ بِهِمَا عَلَى رَأسِهِ وَوَجهِهِ وَمَا أَقبَلَ مِن جَسَدِهِ)) (يفعلُ ذلك ثلاثَ مرَّاتٍ

English meaning

When retiring to his bed every night, the Prophet would hold his palms together, spit (A form of spitting comprising mainly of air with little spittle) in them, recite the last three chapters (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) of the Quran and then wipe over his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with his head and face and then all parts of the body, he would do this three times.

Explanation (Tafseer)

This entry describes reciting Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas before sleep, then passing the hands over the body. Al-Ikhlas declares Allah’s absolute oneness, while Al-Falaq and An-Nas seek His protection from created evil, darkness, those who blow on knots, envy, whispering, and evil among jinn and people.
