Invocation to be recited when placing the dead in his grave

بِسمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى سُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ

Pronunciation

Bismil-lahi wa'ala sunnati rasoolil-lah

English meaning

In the name of Allah and upon the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.

Explanation (Tafseer)

These words accompany placing the deceased in the grave. Beginning in Allah’s name places the act under remembrance of Him, while “upon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah” connects the burial to the prophetic way rather than treating it as a merely physical act.
