AAabdullah Ibn Sarjis said: ‘I went to see the Prophet and ate from his food and then said to him: (May Allah forgive you, O Messenger of Allah.) he replied: (and you.)

Explanation (Tafseer)

The response “and you” returns the same request for forgiveness to the person who offered it. Its brevity makes the exchange reciprocal: the first speaker asks Allah to forgive, and the reply includes that speaker in an equal prayer rather than adding a different wish.
