On arrival in Makkah (for Tamattu')

Umrah: Tawaf al-Qudum & Sa'i

On entering the Sacred Mosque, perform seven circuits of the Ka'bah, pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim, drink Zamzam, then walk seven trips between Safa and Marwah. Shorten the hair to exit ihram (Tamattu').

What to do

  • Begin tawaf at the Black Stone corner; touch or face it and say 'Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.'
  • Men do raml (light jog) in the first three circuits and idtiba (uncovering the right shoulder).
  • After tawaf, pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim — first rak'ah Surah al-Kafirun, second Surah al-Ikhlas.
  • Drink Zamzam to your fill; the Prophet ﷺ said it is for whatever it is drunk for.
  • Begin sa'i at Safa, ascend to where you can see the Ka'bah, and recite the opening dua.

On sighting the Ka'bah

Allahumma zid hadha l-bayta tashrifan wa-ta'ziman wa-takriman wa-mahabah

O Allah, increase this House in honour, magnificence, nobility, and awe.

Between the Yamani Corner and the Black Stone

Rabbana atina fi-d-dunya hasanatan wa fi-l-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhab an-nar

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. (Qur'an 2:201)

On ascending Safa (and Marwah)

Inna s-safa wa-l-marwata min sha'a'irillah, abda'u bima bada'a-llahu bih

Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. I begin with what Allah began with. (Qur'an 2:158)

Standing on Safa / Marwah, facing the Ka'bah (repeat three times)

There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the kingdom and His is the praise, and He is over all things Powerful. There is no god but Allah alone — He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.
