Abu al-Bashar — Father of Humanity

Prophet Adam

The first human, the first prophet, and the first khalifah on earth. Allah fashioned Adam with His own hand from clay, breathed into him of His spirit, taught him the names of all things, and honoured him by commanding the angels to prostrate. From him and his wife Hawwa, all of humanity descended.

The Decision to Create a Vicegerent

Before Adam was created, Allah announced to the angels: 'I will place upon the earth a successive authority.' (Qur'an 2:30) The angels, knowing the bloodshed and corruption that any free creature would cause, asked respectfully: 'Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?' Allah replied: 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.' The exchange already hinted at the weight and dignity Allah had assigned to humanity — a station the angels could see was full of risk, yet which Allah was about to honor in ways they had not yet been shown.

Qur'an 2:30

Wa idh qala rabbuka li-l-mala'ikati inni ja'ilun fi-l-ardi khalifah. Qalu ataj'alu fiha man yufsidu fiha wa yasfiku-d-dima'a wa nahnu nusabbihu bi-hamdika wa nuqaddisu lak.

And mention when your Lord said to the angels: 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.' They said: 'Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?' He said: 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.'

Fashioned from Clay

Allah took clay from all the regions of the earth — black, white, red, smooth, rough — and from it shaped a form. He left it as a hollow body for a time, then breathed into it of His spirit. The first thing Adam did, when the spirit reached his head, was sneeze; he said 'Al-hamdu lillah,' and Allah answered him, 'Yarhamuka rabbuk — may your Lord have mercy on you.' (Reported in Ibn Hibban and elsewhere.) This is why a Muslim still answers a sneezer with 'Yarhamuk Allah' today — the Sunnah goes back to the very first man.

The Knowledge of Names

Allah taught Adam the names of all things — every creature, every category, every concept by which the earth would later be known and managed. Then He presented them to the angels and said: 'Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful.' (Qur'an 2:31) They could not. Adam was then asked, and he named them. The angels said: 'Glory be to You — we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are the Knowing, the Wise.' (Qur'an 2:32) Here Allah established a permanent principle: knowledge, not size or speed or strength, is the foundation of human honor.

Qur'an 2:31-32

Wa 'allama Adama l-asma'a kullaha thumma 'aradahum 'ala l-mala'ikati fa-qala anbi'uni bi-asma'i ha'ula'i in kuntum sadiqin.

And He taught Adam the names — all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said: 'Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful.' They said: 'Glory be to You — we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the Knowing, the Wise.'

The Prostration of the Angels and the Refusal of Iblis

Allah commanded the angels to prostrate to Adam — a prostration of greeting and respect, not of worship. All the angels obeyed. Iblis, who was of the jinn but had risen to the company of the angels through his worship, refused. 'I am better than him,' he said. 'You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.' (Qur'an 7:12) Allah cast him out and cursed him. Iblis asked for respite until the Day of Resurrection so he could mislead Adam's children — a request Allah granted as a test, not as a defeat.

Life in the Garden

Adam was placed in the Garden with his wife Hawwa, whom Allah created from him. They were told: 'Eat from wherever you wish, but do not approach this tree, lest you become wrongdoers.' (Qur'an 2:35) The garden was a place of ease, of unhurried beauty, and of a single simple boundary.

The Whisper of Iblis

Iblis approached them swearing he was sincere: 'Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or among the immortals.' (Qur'an 7:20) The first deception in human history wore the costume of well-wishing. They ate, and at once their inner state changed; their covering of grace fell away, and they hastily covered themselves with leaves of the garden. They realized what they had done.

Repentance and Mercy

Adam and Hawwa did not blame Iblis or argue. They turned in regret to their Lord, and Allah taught Adam the words that would become the prototype of all human repentance: 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.' (Qur'an 7:23) Allah accepted their repentance. The contrast is sharp: Iblis sinned and blamed Allah; Adam sinned and blamed himself. That is why Iblis was cast away and Adam was raised in rank.

Qur'an 7:23

Qala rabbana zalamna anfusana, wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna la-nakunanna min al-khasirin.

They said: 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.' The prototype prayer of human repentance — recited by every believer in distress, often together with the dua of Yunus (21:87).

Qur'an 2:37

Fa-talaqqa Adamu min rabbihi kalimatin fa-taba 'alayh, innahu huwa t-Tawwabu r-Rahim.

Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

Descent to Earth

They were sent down to live as Allah's vicegerents on earth. Allah said: 'There will be for you on the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time.' (Qur'an 2:36) He also promised: 'Whenever guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will have no fear nor will they grieve.' From the very first descent, the human contract was set: a temporary stay, regular guidance, and ultimate return.

Cain and Abel

Adam and Hawwa had children. Two of his sons offered sacrifices, and Allah accepted from one (Habil/Abel) and not the other (Qabil/Cain). Qabil, jealous, said: 'I will surely kill you.' Habil answered with the words of a believer: 'If you raise your hand against me to kill me, I will not raise my hand against you to kill you. I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.' (Qur'an 5:28) Qabil killed his brother — the first murder. He did not know what to do with the body. Allah sent a raven to scratch the ground, showing him how to bury his brother. Qabil cried out in regret. The first murder was followed by the first regret, and the body of the first prophet's son was the first body buried in the earth.

Death and Inheritance

Adam lived a long life — narrations suggest around a thousand years. Before he died he gathered his children and gave them counsel. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When Allah created Adam, He wiped his back, and every soul of his descendants He was going to create until the Day of Resurrection fell from his back.' (Tirmidhi) Every human being, born and unborn, was once shown to Adam. He is the father of us all.

Lessons

  • Knowledge is the foundation of human honour — Allah taught Adam the names before commanding the angels to prostrate.
  • Arrogance is the root of Iblis's fall, and the disease he tries to spread to every human heart.
  • Sin does not define a believer; how he responds to sin does. Adam was raised by his repentance.
  • Every temptation comes wearing the costume of sincere advice — be wary of the whisper that says 'this rule is keeping you small.'
  • The first prophet was also the first to bury a son. The grief of fathers and mothers is not new to the human story.
  • All of humanity is one family — the children of one father and one mother. There is no real superiority by race or color.
