Sheikh al-Anbiya — Elder of the Prophets
Prophet Nuh نُوح
Sent to a people who had been the first to drift into idol-worship, after generations of righteousness following Adam. He called them for nine and a half centuries; only a handful believed. Allah commanded him to build the Ark, and the great flood came.
The Origin of Idolatry
Between Adam and Nuh, ten generations passed in tawhid. (Bukhari) The first slippage came through people who memorialized their righteous ancestors — Wadd, Suwa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq, and Nasr — by setting up statues to remember them. The next generation forgot why the statues had been raised, and the generation after that began to worship them. This is the origin of all idolatry: well-meaning excess that drifts, over generations, into a hard practice. Allah sent Nuh to a people deep in this drift.
Nine and a Half Centuries of Calling
Allah says: 'And We certainly sent Nuh to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years.' (Qur'an 29:14) For nine and a half centuries Nuh called them — by day, by night, openly, secretly. He himself describes his methods in Surah Nuh: 'My Lord, I have called my people night and day, but my calling only increased them in flight. Whenever I called them so that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with great arrogance.' (Qur'an 71:5-7) He never tired, never softened the message, and never raised his voice in anger.
Wa la-qad arsalna Nuhan ila qawmihi fa-labitha fihim alfa sanatin illa khamsina 'ama, fa-akhadhahumu t-tufanu wa hum zalimun.
And We certainly sent Nuh to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years. Then the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.
Qala rabbi inni da'awtu qawmi laylan wa nahara. Fa-lam yazidhum du'a'i illa firara. Wa inni kullama da'awtuhum li-taghfira lahum ja'alu asabi'ahum fi adhanihim wa-staghshaw thiyabahum wa asarru wa-stakbaru-stikbara.
He said: 'My Lord, I have called my people night and day, but my calling only increased them in flight. Whenever I called them so that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with great arrogance.'
The Argument of the Elite
The leaders of his people said: 'We do not see you except as a man like us, and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest among us, weak in judgment.' (Qur'an 11:27) The argument was old then and remains familiar today: a true prophet must be elite; the truth must be on the side of wealth and status. Nuh did not bend. 'Should I drive away those who believe?' he asked. 'They are going to meet their Lord — but I see you to be a people behaving ignorantly.' (Qur'an 11:29-30)
The Promise of Forgiveness and Provision
Nuh offered them not threats but encouragement: 'I said, Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send rain upon you in showers, and give you increase in wealth and children, and provide for you gardens and rivers.' (Qur'an 71:10-12) Istighfar — seeking Allah's forgiveness — is the gate to worldly mercy and not only to the next life. Nuh's people refused, and the same gates that would have opened for them in mercy were the ones that opened in punishment.
The Building of the Ark
Allah revealed to Nuh: 'Build the Ark under Our watch and by Our revelation. And do not address Me concerning those who have wronged — they are to be drowned.' (Qur'an 11:37) Nuh began to build on dry land, with no body of water in sight. The chiefs passed by and mocked him — a prophet turned carpenter, his ship resting absurdly in the sand. 'If you ridicule us,' Nuh answered, 'we will ridicule you just as you ridicule, and you will know upon whom a disgracing punishment will come and upon whom will descend an enduring punishment.' (Qur'an 11:38-39)
The Flood Begins
When the command came, the oven baked the bread of the believers and from it the water began to gush. (Tafsir Ibn Kathir.) The sky poured, the earth split, the rivers rose, and the world that had laughed at Nuh found itself standing in water that climbed to the knees, then to the waist, then to the chest, then over the head.
Nuh's Son
Among the drowning was Nuh's own son, who had refused to board with the believers. Nuh called to him: 'O my son, embark with us and do not be with the disbelievers.' He answered: 'I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water.' Nuh said: 'There is no protector today from the decree of Allah, except for whom He gives mercy.' A wave came between them, and he was among the drowned. (Qur'an 11:42-43) Nuh cried out to his Lord: 'My Lord, indeed my son is of my family, and indeed Your promise is true, and You are the most just of judges.' Allah replied — and the answer is a thunderclap — 'O Nuh, he is not of your family. Indeed, he is a deed other than righteous.' (Qur'an 11:46) The family that matters is the family of faith.
Resting on Mount Judi
When the work of the flood was done, Allah said: 'O earth, swallow your water; and O sky, hold back. And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished. The Ark came to rest on Mount Judi, and it was said: Away with the wrongdoing people.' (Qur'an 11:44) The sentence is a single command, spoken to the cosmos itself. Mount Judi is in present-day southeastern Turkey.
The Greeting of Peace
Nuh and the believers descended in peace. 'It was said: O Nuh, descend in security from Us and blessings upon you and upon nations from those with you.' (Qur'an 11:48) Every human being alive today descends from the three sons of Nuh who survived — Shem, Ham, and Japheth (according to the well-known tradition) — which is why he is called the 'second Adam' and the elder of the prophets.
Lessons
- Patience in calling to Allah is measured in generations, not days — Nuh laboured for 950 years.
- Family ties without faith do not save anyone, and faith without family ties is its own family.
- Istighfar opens worldly mercy as well as eternal forgiveness.
- Mocking the truth never delays it — it only deepens regret when the truth arrives.
- Idolatry begins as well-meaning excess; remembrance of the righteous can drift into worship of them if it is not kept in check.
- Allah's help arrives in its time, not in ours. Do not give up before the ark is afloat.
