Dhun-Nun — Companion of the Whale
Prophet Yunus يُونُس
Sent to the people of Nineveh in northern Iraq. He left them in anger before Allah's permission, was cast into the sea, swallowed by a great fish, and from the three layers of darkness inside its belly cried out the words of repentance Allah Himself would record in the Qur'an as the gateway of every distressed believer to His mercy.
Sent to Nineveh
Yunus was sent to the people of Nineveh — a great city of northern Iraq, on the eastern bank of the Tigris, near modern-day Mosul. The Qur'an records his city's salvation in a verse that stands alone in the prophetic record: 'Then has there not been a city that believed, so its faith benefited it, except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.' (Qur'an 10:98). Of all the cities sent prophets in the Qur'an, only Yunus's city repented in time.
The Departure in Anger
But the story of the city's repentance is the END of the story. Yunus had called them for a long time, seen the rejection, warned them of punishment, and then — before Allah's clear permission — left them. 'And [mention] Dhun-Nun, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree upon him.' (Qur'an 21:87). The classical mufassirun explain 'thought We would not decree upon him' as Yunus assuming he would not be held to account for leaving without permission. He boarded a ship to flee.
The Lots and the Sea
The ship was overloaded. A storm rose. The sailors cast lots to choose who would be thrown overboard to lighten the load. The lot fell on Yunus. They threw him in. 'And indeed, Yunus was among the messengers. When he ran away to the laden ship. And he drew lots and was among the losers. Then the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy.' (Qur'an 37:139-142). A great fish — the Qur'an's word is hut — was waiting at Allah's command. It swallowed him whole.
Three Layers of Darkness
From inside the belly of the fish, Yunus called upon Allah. The Qur'an records his prayer with breath-taking precision: 'And he called out within the layers of darkness: There is no god but You. Glory be to You. Indeed, I was of the wrongdoers.' (Qur'an 21:87). Three layers of darkness — the darkness of the sea, the darkness of the night, the darkness of the fish's belly. And the prayer itself has three parts: declare Allah's oneness, glorify Him, confess one's own wrongdoing. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No Muslim ever supplicates with these words for any matter but that Allah answers him.' (Tirmidhi 3505).
فَنَادَىٰ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ أَن لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
Fa-nada fi z-zulumati an la ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu min az-zalimin.
And he called out within the layers of darkness: 'There is no god but You. Glory be to You. Indeed, I was of the wrongdoers.'
Da'watu Dhi-n-Nun idh da'a wa huwa fi batni-l-hut: La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu min az-zalimin. Fa-innahu lam yad'u biha rajulun muslimun fi shay'in qattu illa-stajaba-llahu lah.
The supplication of Dhun-Nun when he called from within the belly of the fish — 'There is no god but You; glory be to You; I was of the wrongdoers.' No Muslim ever supplicates with it for any matter but that Allah answers him.
If He Had Not Been Among Those Who Glorify
Allah says: 'And had he not been of those who exalt Allah (al-musabbihin), he would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.' (Qur'an 37:143-144). The implication is staggering: it was the dhikr Yunus had built up over his years of prophethood — the tasbih that he had stored up before the trial — that became his rescue inside the trial. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever wishes to be heard by Allah in times of distress should remember Him much in times of ease.' (Tirmidhi 3382, sound chain).
The Sapling on the Beach
The fish cast him onto an empty shore. The Qur'an describes the moment with extraordinary tenderness: 'But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill. And We caused to grow over him a plant of gourd (yaqtin). And We sent him to a hundred thousand or more.' (Qur'an 37:145-147). A gourd plant — broad-leaved, fast-growing — gave him shade as his body recovered from the corrosive air of the fish's belly. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No one should say I am better than Yunus ibn Matta.' (Bukhari 3413) — a reminder that even a great prophet's moment of weakness is a moment Allah handled with mercy, not condemnation.
The Repentance of Nineveh
Allah sent him back to Nineveh. This time, before he arrived, the people had seen the signs that he had warned them of — clouds of punishment gathering. They went out into the open, men and women and children, even the cattle, weeping and calling on Allah to forgive them. When Yunus came, they had already repented. Allah lifted the punishment from them. The Qur'an names this as a unique outcome (10:98) — a whole city, repenting in time, given a continued life. The Prophet ﷺ said of Yunus: 'I have a higher right (haqq) over Yunus ibn Matta than this' — pointing to a particular sign — and the meaning is that Muhammad ﷺ stood with him in brotherhood, not above him.
The Du'a of Distress
The verse of Yunus — La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu min az-zalimin — has become the standing du'a of every Muslim in distress. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The supplication of Dhun-Nun, when he supplicated within the belly of the fish, was: La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu min az-zalimin. No Muslim ever calls upon Allah with these words concerning anything except that Allah answers him.' (Tirmidhi 3505, classed sahih). It is a four-verse prayer in three lines: tawhid, tasbih, confession. The order is the secret.
Lessons
- Do not leave the work Allah has given you without His permission — even a prophet was held to account for it (21:87).
- Three layers of darkness become one prayer when the heart turns to Allah.
- Store up dhikr in ease and it will lift you in distress (37:143).
- The du'a of Yunus is the standing du'a of every Muslim in trouble (Tirmidhi 3505).
- A whole city repenting in time has saved itself — repentance in time is the only rescue (10:98).
- Even prophets fall briefly into anger or fatigue — Allah's response is mercy and a sapling of shade (37:146).
