Ibrahim and his family: stories and Quran readings

Begin with Ibrahim and Isma’il raising the Ka’bah, then read episodes from the lives of Isma’il and Ya’qub. This collection connects related family stories while keeping each prophet’s complete narrative available separately.

Use the Quran references alongside the stories. The Hajj guide provides a separate place to read about the pilgrimage rituals associated with Ibrahim’s family.

Prophet Ibrahim

Raising the Ka'bah

Ibrahim and Ismail raised the foundations of the Ka'bah in Makkah, working together — the father lifting stones, the son passing them up. As they worked they prayed: 'Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing. Our Lord, and make us Muslims to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful. Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them.' (Qur'an 2:127-129) That last prayer was answered, two and a half thousand years later, in the person of Muhammad ﷺ — born of the line of Ismail.

Prophet Isma'il

Patient and Honored

Allah praises Ismail in two places. 'And mention in the Book Isma'il. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet. And he used to enjoin upon his people the prayer and zakah, and he was, in the sight of his Lord, pleasing.' (Qur'an 19:54-55). And: 'And Isma'il and Idris and Dhul-Kifl — all were of the patient. And We admitted them into Our mercy.' (21:85-86). The Qur'an singles out one specific virtue: he was sadiq al-wa'd — true to his promise. Tafsir tradition recounts that Ismail once told a man, 'Wait for me here,' and the man forgot; Ismail waited three days for him to return (Ibn Kathir). The line of Muhammad ﷺ traces back to him through Adnan.

Prophet Ya'qub

Will You Be Witnesses?

Ya'qub's deathbed scene is one of the most striking in the Qur'an: 'Or were you witnesses when death approached Ya'qub, when he said to his sons: What will you worship after me? They said: We will worship your God and the God of your fathers — Ibrahim, Ismail, and Ishaq — one God, and to Him we submit.' (Qur'an 2:133). The same verse silences a Jewish-Christian debate of the Prophet's ﷺ time about which religion Ya'qub had bequeathed to his sons — the answer is tawhid, plain submission, before any of the later denominational divisions.
