Adhkar After the Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ never left his prayer-place without specific words of remembrance. These adhkar after every salah are some of the most reward-bearing acts in the Sunnah.
Istighfar Three Times
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ. اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ، تَبَارَكْتَ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
Astaghfirullah (×3). Allahumma anta-s-salam wa minka-s-salam, tabarakta ya dha-l-jalali wa-l-ikram
I seek Allah's forgiveness. I seek Allah's forgiveness. I seek Allah's forgiveness. O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.
The first words after the salam, taught by the Prophet ﷺ. Thawban said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he would seek forgiveness three times and then say…' (Muslim 591). 'You are Peace' opens the door of every other dhikr that follows.
Ayat al-Kursi
اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ…
Allah — there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep…
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer — nothing separates him from Paradise except death.' (an-Nasa'i 9928, classed sahih). Surah al-Baqarah 2:255 — the greatest verse in the Qur'an by the Prophet's ﷺ own testimony (Muslim 810).
The Three Quls
Recite Surah al-Ikhlas (112), Surah al-Falaq (113), and Surah an-Nas (114) once after Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha — and three times after Maghrib and Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'They suffice you against every harm.' (Abu Dawud 5082, Tirmidhi 2903). These are the same three surahs the Prophet ﷺ used to recite before sleep.
Tasbih of Fatimah
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ (×33)، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (×33)، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ (×33)، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
Subhan Allah (×33), Al-hamdu lillah (×33), Allahu Akbar (×33), La ilaha illa-llah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu-l-mulk wa lahu-l-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir
Glory be to Allah (×33), All praise is for Allah (×33), Allah is the Greatest (×33), There is no god but Allah alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things competent.
The Prophet ﷺ taught this combination to his daughter Fatimah and her husband Ali when she asked him for a servant to help with her household: 'Shall I not teach you something better than what you asked? When you go to bed, say it; when you finish each prayer, say it — it is better for you than a servant.' (Bukhari 3705, Muslim 2727). The full 100 (33+33+33+1) is the established Sunnah after every prayer.
La ilaha illa-llah Ten Times after Maghrib and Fajr
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
La ilaha illa-llah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu-l-mulk wa lahu-l-hamd, yuhyi wa yumit, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir
There is no god but Allah alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise; He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent.
Recited ten times after Maghrib and Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever says it ten times after Maghrib or Fajr — Allah will write for him a hundred good deeds, erase a hundred bad ones, raise him by a hundred degrees, and it will be like he freed ten slaves and he will be protected from every disliked thing until the next prayer.' (Tirmidhi 3474).
